How I create...

As you may expect, each piece comes together a little differently and I continue to learn that the creative process is never predictable or tidy.  For my travel prints, intitially, some kind of inspiration is made.  I have either been to the site on a trip, take Riomarggiore for example or have enjoyed the place for recreation, take Lake Alpine for example.  I take pictures from different angles and start to visualize how I might arrange the elements of a travel print in my mind and on paper.  Sometimes I might make a rough sketch in my journal to keep my thoughts fresh.  At home I upload the pictures on the computer and begin analyzing the best features and how they would work on a travel print.  I use tape to mark off the border and then sketch a light pencil drawing of the entire print, the border,  major features, and lettering, which usually takes the longest to draw out.  Each letter is measured out in several different directions, for thickness, spacing, and height. It can take me a few hours to complete the lettering alone, especially if I have had to rewrite it more than one time.   The most common medium I use is watercolor.   When the painting portion is complete and dry, I often go back in with a very fine tip Micron pen and add some pen work to accent certain details and add my DC logo box, usually in the bottom corner.  Then I go back to the lettering, either to outline or fill in the words. When the masking tape is removed and the picture is framed, it is complete and ready for reproduction.
